Day by Day
When I was in high school in rural northern Indiana, some friends were part of a community wide production of Godspell. They asked if I would be part of the set crew working with lighting and sound cues, and I agreed. Not having been raised in the faith, this musical was the first time I can remember hearing the Gospel story. My heart was deeply moved at rehearsal after rehearsal. One song particularly impacted me and has forever shaped my understanding of life with Christ. The lyrics of Day by Day are simple:
Day by day Oh Dear Lord Three things I pray To see thee more clearly Love thee more dearly Follow thee more nearly Day by day
The song taught me, and still reminds me, that Christ is always at work; we just grow eyes to see His presence and power. Having seen his work, we can increasingly fall head over heels in love as if falling into a pool of grace. Finally, what we find with Christ is so compelling that we respond by walking with Christ in his forgiving and serving ways. This happens one intention, one moment and one step at a time… day by day. Christ-followers are a people who allow these intimate relationships to chart the course of their days. What a beautiful, even if not always easy, pathway to live.
I’ll be writing a weekly email to share a faith reflection, some information about what’s happening in church life at Old Bethel, and to extend invitations to upcoming ways to grow in faith. The weekly letter is entitled Day by Day as a reminder that Christ’s love and our response is an every day journey.
Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

Community Life: What’s Happening at Old Bethel
Pastor Saul and Mrs. Irma Sauceda have arrived from Texas! Through the Congregational Development Grant, Pastor Saul has been selected to lead the development of Hispanic Ministry. He will be on staff as one of four pastors here at Old Bethel. Hispanic ministry is to be part of our church community and one of this church’s many amazing outreach ministries.
Thanks to the crew who are preparing for Vacation Bible School! It begins Monday, July 13. Dinner is at 5:15. If you haven’t already, please invite others to take part! Please be praying for children from Warren Township to attend. Let us give thanks in advance for the ways God will speak and move in their hearts as they attend. Let the fun begin!
We are in the process of hiring a contemporary worship leader for the 11:00 a.m. worship service, and a family ministry administrative assistant. Four applicants for the family ministry position are ready to interview in the next ten days. Thanks to Pastor Matthew for his diligence in finding great candidates. We look forward to the administrative infrastructure this person will bring to growing Family Ministries.
This Sunday, July 12, from 1-3 there will be a cake reception in Fellowship Hall for Pastor Saul and his family, as well as Pastor Jen (me) and my family. This is a great time for us to meet you, so we hope you’ll come. It is an important time of building relationship as we continue our mission for Christ. Did I mention there will be cake? Yum! Hope to see you there!
