Day by Day with Rev. Jen

September 7, 2017

All-Church studies, such as the current LEGACY study, allow us to grow together as the church. The Apostle Paul likens the church to a body, specifically Christ’s body; if a body is to grow and become strong, all its parts do so together. We have approximately 135 known participants in the book study, as well as an average of 90 attendees to the Wednesday night Speaker Series. Not to mention those participating in small group discussions beyond Wednesday night! Thank you to all participants for prioritizing the growth of the body as part of our work in Christ!

Last Wednesday, our Legacy speaker session was about the nuts and bolts of the United Methodist global connectional organizational system. This system empowers us to mobilize church bodies around the globe; we can do more ministry together! There were some questions that we didn’t answer or answer fully. Here they are:

What is the difference between an Ordained Deacon and an Ordained Elder in the United Methodist Church?

Here is a good description: http://www.eocumc.com/order-of-deacons/similaries-differences.html

What percent of conferences pay their full apportionment to the GENERAL CONFERENCE (which is the global conference)?

We have US statistics. In 2016 we saw a record high. See here: http://www.umc.org/news-and-media/record-number-of-conferences-give-100-percent

What percent of churches pay their full tithe to the Indiana Conference?

According to the Conference office, 647 churches paid at or above the 90% level in 2016. This is approximately 58% of our churches. This is a good increase from last year.

Who owns the church building and grounds?

See this information on the TRUST CLAUSE. See specifically number 11 for answers to a common questions. http://s3.amazonaws.com/Website_GCFA/reports/legal/documents/Trust_Clause_Brochure_Feb_2014.pd

What percentage of the global general ministry does the United States pay?

Senator Pat Miller provided the statistics. 99%.

What percentage of the global United Methodist membership is the United States’ membership?

2015 date shows the United States at 55%. This is rapidly changing as African membership grows. By 2020, the United States may not have the majority of membership. (Data provided by Senator Pat Miller).

Finally, Senator Miller provided information about the Special Commission to discuss Human Sexuality in the United Methodist church. You received information via email as that commission was formed. Here is a link to keep up-to-date on information as the Commission progresses. http://www.umc.org/who-we-are/commission-on-a-way-forward

COMMUNITY:

Family Promise Clothing Drive concludes this Sunday, September 10. Interfaith Hospitality Network, a ministry to homeless families, receives a $5 voucher for each white kitchen bag of clothing. These vouchers are given to IHN guests to supplement their needs. Old Bethel will collect clothing only. Donations must be in white kitchen bags and labeled “IHN”.

Meijer Simply Give Campaign runs through September 16. Meijer on East Washington Street is again partnering with Old Bethel & Partners Food Pantry to raise funds for Pantry food purchases. When you make a donation at the register it will be matched, dollar-for-dollar, by Meijer. Thanks for helping support our Pantry by shopping at the East Washington Street Meijer and making a small donation during this Simply Give Campaign.

Bottle Caps to Benches: 400 pounds of caps equals 1 bench for Pleasant Run Elementary School. Pick up a list of acceptable caps and lids at the Welcome Center. Leave your donations in the large water bottle container in the lobby.

INVITATIONS

Faith Promise Mission Sunday is this Sunday, September 10. Our lives in Christ are about seeking his mission. Faith Promise is financial giving in addition to tithes and offerings each Sunday. Consider pledging financial giving to help provide homes through Habitat for Humanity, help empower communities in Reynosa, Mexico, and so much more. FAITH PROMISE pledge cards will be available in the bulletin on September 10. We will have special community and church leaders inspiring us about what John Wesley calls social holiness!

September 24, we will launch a worship series called, “A PLACE CALLED HOME.” The idea of finding home is a key theme in scripture. One of the ways we will explore this theme AND discuss what it means to spiritually and financially support church as a home for others to grow in faith is to GATHER IN HOMES for DESSERT! Come enjoy a dessert, connect with a group of faith family members and explore home as a part of faith! DESSERT SIGN UPS will be in the lobby on September 10 & 17. Desserts will begin and continue throughout the following three weeks! Don't miss out!

September 17, 5-7:00pm all are invited to this Maker Fun Fest. This is an opportunity for everyone, short and tall, big and small, young and old, to gather together to share and grow in faith! All are welcome. A free meal will be served, we’ll engage in conversation around the dinner table, create things together, engage in a service project, and then we will close with some of our favorite VBS songs! Your family will not want to miss this night of creativity and fun.

Old Bethel Travelers’ Christmas trip is Saturday, December 2. We will travel to see the Purdue University Christmas Show, a beautiful musical with many groups participating including the Purduettes, of which our own Bella Matthews is a member. Tickets are currently being held but since it is always a sell-out, we must have your $25 deposit by September 24! Total cost will be $55-$80, depending on number of participants. The show is at 4:00pm. Checks made payable to OBUMC may be left in our box in the office or mailed to Brenda Maley, 1640 Park Chase Place, Indianapolis IN 46229.

Serving Christ Together,

Pastor Jen
